A young player comes to the plate in the last inning with runners in scoring position. His team is down by a run. He steps into the box and advice starts cascading from the stands and bench. "Keep your eye on the ball." "Keep your back elbow up." "Just make contact." "You have to get a hit." "Straighten it out." "Swing early," etc.  The player decides to go with "just make contact" and dribbles a ground ball back to the pitcher.

This common scenario is often the result of poor advice on hitting, improper hitting goals and a lack of preparation on the part of the hitter. It happens at varying levels of competition, from t-ball to high school. The lack of hitting success (as defined by parents and coaches) experienced by most youth baseball players can create a great deal of frustration for everyone involved. But it doesn’t have to be this way. By establishing proper goals, preparing oneself to play and learning how to swing properly, players can greatly improve their success at the plate.

My oldest son learned to hit using the principles in the guide. As a high school junior, he won his league's triple crown and broke all of the major hitting records at his high school. He was selected first team All Ohio. During his senior year he set more records and was selected second team All Ohio.
